Outboard & Sterndrive propeller installation and removal procedure
-
Before servicing the propeller, be sure the engine is in neutral and the ignition is in the off position to avoid any possibility of the engine starting which may cause severe injury to the person servicing the propeller.
-
Verify that a thrust washer is installed on the shaft prior to installing the propeller, very serious damage will occur to both the propeller and prop shaft housing if the propeller is installed without a thrust washer, if so equipped.
-
Apply prop shaft grease to the shaft splines to avoid corrosion and seizure of the prop to the shaft.
-
Align propeller splines to shaft splines and install till fully seated against thrust washer.
-
Apply aft washer.
-
Apply nut tab washer as required.
-
Apply nut and nut keeper as required and tighten to 55 ft-lbs. or as specified by manufacturer.
-
Apply cotter pin if required.
-
Verify that the propeller spins freely without hitting cavitation plate or trim tab anode if so equipped.
-
Properly installing a propeller varies by manufacturers. Refer to your owners manual for proper propeller installation. Note that in most all cases good marine grease is necessary to avoid seizure of the propeller to the prop shaft.
